Starting from scratch, the two lessons enable choir members with little music knowledge to be able to follow a choral score. It also lays a foundation for further training in sight singing. The contents cover the following:
• Basic staff notation reading: clef, pitch, rhythm, dynamics, expressions, etc. (also touch upon number notation and lead sheet);
• Choral score navigation: Closed score & open score, repeat, D.C. al Fine, SATB parts, piano part, etc.;
• Introduction to sight-singing: fixed-doh & movable-doh methods, French time names method, keys recognition, rhythmic counting, etc.;
• Some general knowledge for choristers.

This course is mainly for people who have little background of Chinese music so that they can build up some basic knowledge on how to use Chinese musical instruments in worship. The contents include:

• Instrumentation for small ensembles of Chinese instruments and ensembles of mixed Chinese and Western instruments;

我嘗試借古鑑今,用原始的希臘五聲音階引伸不同素材,示範多種聲響創作及變化,為一般傳統的聲響素材添枝加葉,藉此豐富及壯大音樂創作技法,以茲分享給同好。
(II) : 可視為作曲技法的實踐及活用探討。
不論傳統抑或新式材料,我們如何設計並應用所選擇的音群及聲響素材?
假設,按幾個簡單星座 (Constellation) 的亮星形象,如 :
天燕座 (Apus) α, β, γ, δ1, δ2 五亮星,或天鴿座 (Columba) α, β, γ, δ, ε, η, κ 七亮星 …等,經過音群的混合變化及重組而模擬成為不同的多聲音程 / 音階 / 和聲素材 (以十二個半音以內的任何數為限)。
1. 創意地設定重點音程、音型及和聲,運用「加減法」(Additive & Subtractive)增生多樣可變的積體(Variable texture)。
2. 全曲藉適切的藝術意境 (Artistic phenomena),及配合各種匹配的節奏型態 (Rhythmic figures) 去塑造一個恰當而絢麗的聲響意象 (Acoustic image)。
• 用在課堂上的音階 :
Pentatonic scales (5 notes) / Hexatonic scales (6 notes) / Heptatonic scales
(7 notes) / Octatonic scales (8 notes) / Enneatonic scales (9 notes) /
Decatonic scales (10 notes) / Combined scales (9-11 notes) … etc.

A: Forward or Introduction
「Ancient Greek Pentatonic Scale,
Recurring in accordance with the main tone [main sequence star];
The challenge of the times,
Give nova for a new day.」
I try to learn from the past and the present by using various elements of the ancient Greek Pentatonic Scale. I would like to share this knowledge with you to demonstrate different ways of writing to enrich the traditional methods.
B: Practice & Live Exploration
Whether it is traditional or new material, how do we design and apply the chosen tone clusters and sonorities?
Suppose we use several simple constellations, such as:
The Apus (α, β, γ, δ1, δ2) 5 bright stars,
Columba (α, β, γ, δ, ε, η, κ) 7 bright stars….
to mix and change tone clusters to rearrange and mold into multiple intervals, scales, and harmony material (limiting to any number of semitones within the chromatic scale).
1/ Creatively setting principal intervals, melodic shapes and harmony by using ‘Additive & Subtractive’ methods to increase multiple variable textures.
2/ Through appropriate ‘artistic phenomena’ to match various ‘rhythmic figures’ to build an appropriate and ablaze ‘acoustic image’.
Scales to be used in class:
Pentatonic scales (5 notes),
Hexatonic scales (6 notes),
Heptatonic scales (7 notes),
Octatonic scales (8 notes),
Enneatonic scales (9 notes),
Decatonic scales (10 notes),
Combined scales (9-11 notes)….etc.
